[This Wiki-Page also written in Greek at the AWMN.net Wiki]

This page is to demonstrate that there is no need to install programs on your Mac that may damage your System, if not used properly (e.g. MacPorts, Darwine, etc.). You can have it that way by following the instruction in the wiki page "Mikrotik for Mac".

There is a way to have Mikrotik Winbox on an Intel Mac by using "Wine" & "WineBottler" to create a Wrapper for the "winbox.exe" executable.

I have pre-compiled a standalone "Winbox" app on a Mac with no other software that runs smoothly on Intel Macs and you can find it here (54.4mb), just unzip the file and run it!

There is also a way to create one and i'm going to explain it with the following Guide...

Contents

Part 1 - Preperation

Mikrotik WinBox Stand Alone App Guide Part 1

I will guide you through all the steps to create it yourself, but there are some requirements that must be met!

  • 1st, you have to have an Intel Mac Apple Computer (:P)
  • 2nd, you need to run Leopard or Snow Leopard, and it's better that are upgraded to the latest versions of the Operating System
  • 3d, you need to download WineBottler for your system and install it.

Now that we have completed the list on the "many" requirements, lets get started with Part 2...

Part 2 - WineBottler

Mikrotik WinBox Stand Alone App Guide Part 2

If you downloaded and installed WineBottler, then you'll find it at your Applications Folder waiting for you to run it!

So, the first screen is you get is at the following picture that i've noted down what you see and what it does..

1st WineBottler Run
  1. When a Wine Program has crashed/hung/etc. you can "kill" with that button.
  2. To Execute/Run Existing (pre-made or downloaded) "prefixes"
  3. To Install Predefined Prefixes, where it displays the list in "note-5" to choose from and download.
  4. To Create a Custom Prefix, we will talk about it in later step of this guide
  5. The list of pre-made Prefixes to download from (look "note-3")
  6. If you want to proceed without the nag screens about license acceptance of each component that is embeded to the Prefix, in my opinion you should know the license agreement of each software you use, and had read it at least once!
  7. The last step, Install the thing!

What happens next we are going to discuss at Part 3...

Part 3 - Create Custom Prefix

Mikrotik WinBox Stand Alone App Guide Part 3

Is i said earlier there is the 3rd selection named "Create Custom Prefix" that we are going to see here. So open WineBottler if you closed it and select "Create Custom Prefix" from the list on the left and by looking the following picture see what is what..

  1. click on the "select File..." and browse your folders for the "winbox.exe" and click Open at the dialog box.
  2. Select the little box that says "Copy Only....." cause the "winbox.exe" it's a windows standalone executable and not an installation file. There is no need for WineBottler to treat it like one!
  3. Select the little box that says "Include Wine binaries..." so the App you are going to compile doesn't need the Wine files and libraries to run, it's going to be a real standalone app like when you use it on the Windows Platform
  4. Click the "Install" button to get on with the procedure.. (next picture will help you get passed the next dialogs)

  1. At the "Save As:" text box you need to write down the name you want your app to have, for example Mikrotik WinBox
  2. Then you must select the folder you want it places, for example your Applications or one of your choice!
  3. Click the "Save" button when you are ready to get this party starting!

There is going to be a small dialog box displaying what is going on with the compilation to standalone procedure, i quote some pictures so you'll know what is going to happen...

and then finish the whole thing with the message "Prefix Created Succesfully" as it is displayed below

Thats It ! - Prefix is Created

You have your StandAlone Mikrotik WinBox Application to run Natively on your Mac!

Hope you, have us much fun as i had creating this guide/app and..

it's a secret, you can use the same proccess to create your own Windows Apps to run on a Mac!

Have Fun Mikrotik-Mates!
