Summary

MikroTik`s S+RJ10 is unique 6-speed RJ-45 module based on Marvell 88X3310P. This unique module offers up to 10 Gbps speeds over regular familiar twisted-pair cables in your existing products that have SFP+ ports. Any MikroTik device that has SFP+ ports can now be used without installing any optical fiber. This article will clarify S+RJ10 usage in MikroTik`s devices with passive and active cooling.

General Guidance

Product specification

Transceivers avarage power consumption is 2.7 W (10GBASE-T, 30 m link). S+RJ10 operating temperature is 0 to +70 C, but transceiver itself can heat up above 90C.

S+RJ10 Positioning in devices

Due highly operating temperatures, we are recommending to use S+RJ10 transceivers with optical transceiver or unused SFP+ interface in between them. Take a look on the transceivers capable distance comparison table.

We do not recommend to place transceivers side by side
As mentioned, S+RJ10 heat up more than regular transceivers and keeping them side by side will heat them more than necessary, especially in devices with 4 linear SFP cages. We are recommending to place S+RJ10 in every second interface with keeping optical transceiver or empty port in between them.
Even devices which come with separated SFP+ cages, for example CRS309-1G-8S+, we still do not recommend to use S+RJ10 transceivers beside each other. Use S+RJ10 in every second interface to avoid transceivers overheating which may cause unpredictable errors.

Devices which come with 4 or 8 block SFP+ cages are not exceptions. We are recommending to use one S+RJ10 transceiver peer 4xSFP+ cage block and avoiding placing them side by side. Keep at least one vertical row empty(without S+RJ10) after plugged S+RJ10 transceiver.

Using S+RJ10 side by side

It is not always possible to place transceivers in proper order. In cases where two or more S+RJ10 transceivers are plugged in beside, network administrator has to ensure additional cooling for such setup. It can be increased air flow or overall environment temperature refrigeration to keep transceiver temperature below recommended 90C.
